Dr. Patrick Muck Highlights Breakthrough Radiation-Safety Results Using Rampart System at VEITH Symposium
Presentation Features First EVAR Case Performed with the Rampart Guardian—Achieving Radiation Exposure Lower Than a Cross-Country Flight
Dr. Patrick Muck, Chairman of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Program Director of the Vascular Surgery Fellowship and Residency at Good Samaritan Hospital, presented compelling new data on radiation safety during the Radiation Safety, Devices, and Techniques session at the VEITH Symposium in New York City—one of the premier global meetings for Vascular Surgeons and Vascular Specialists. The five-day symposium showcases the most current developments in clinical practice and research, with this year’s program emphasizing innovations that enhance safety and outcomes for both patients and healthcare teams.
In his presentation, Dr. Muck underscored the remarkable reduction in radiation exposure achieved using the Rampart Guardian, a fully lead-free, total-body and total-team protection solution. Backed by RCT-level evidence, the Rampart System provides 20x better protection compared to standard lead aprons or shields—while eliminating the weight and strain associated with traditional lead aprons.
Radiation Exposure “Less Than a Cross-Country Flight”
Dr. Muck highlighted that during the first EVAR procedure performed without lead aprons utilizing the Guardian System, the recorded operator and staff radiation exposure was lower than that of a cross-country commercial flight.
- Typical radiation dose during a flight from New York City to San Francisco: 2.0–2.5 mRem
- Typical exposure per EVAR case using the Rampart System: ~2 mRem
- Annual occupational limit: 5,000 mRem
- At this rate, staff could perform 2,500 cases per year before approaching the yearly limit
“These are complex cases with fluoro times of nearly 30 minutes,” Dr. Muck noted. “It’s spectacular that we’re being protected to a level where we can safely and effectively come out of lead aprons.”
A Safer, More Comprehensive Alternative to Traditional Protection
Traditional lead aprons cover only 60–70% of the body and can weigh up to 24 pounds, contributing to long-term orthopedic injuries. Dr. Muck emphasized the limitations of conventional protective gear: “There’s a failure to lead aprons. They only cover 60–70% of the body and they’re heavy. They cause orthopedic injuries and don’t protect our full body.”
He also praised Rampart’s barrier protection: “I really admire the Rampart System, or what I call barrier protection. Backed by two randomized trials and head-to-head data, Rampart is proven to provide superior protection. We utilize the Guardian as it’s ideal for peripheral and EVAR procedures. It’s easy to use, integrates into our procedural workflows flawlessly, and we can now shed the lead with barrier protection.”
Leadership Perspective on Guardian’s Versatility
Brian Chambless, Chief Commercial Officer at Rampart, emphasized how the system’s adaptability is helping clinicians redefine radiation safety: “Guardian’s highly configurable and easy-to-use design delivers unmatched radiation protection that works across all interventional specialties. Together with the Rampart portfolio of solutions, Guardian offers true total body, total team protection without adding weight to the table or disrupting your workflow.”
Rampart System: Lead-Free, Total Body, Total Team Protection
The Rampart System utilizes completely lead-free attenuating materials to provide comprehensive protection to operators and staff. Designed for seamless workflow integration, the system allows clinicians to safely “shed the lead,” eliminating the physical burden of heavy aprons while significantly improving radiation protection levels.
